Cast parts and those subjected to Forging, Rolling or other high temperature processes end up with reduced carbon content at surface due to high temperatures used during these processes. This reduced surface carbon content not only leads to an inability to achieve desired mechanical properties, but also to an inferior quality component. VHT use sealed quench furnaces to restore carbon content in components to desired levels followed by appropriate heat treatment to achieved required mechanical properties.
